Introduction

Flowminder Foundation (Stiftelsen Flowminder) is a Swedish non-profit organisation (Reg. No. 802477-6414) headquartered in Stockholm, with a branch office in the UK. Our mission is to enable decision-makers to access the data they need to transform the lives of vulnerable people at scale. We specialise in analysing de-identified mobile operator data, satellite imagery, and household survey data to support development and humanitarian interventions.

Flowminder operates globally, focusing on low- and middle-income countries. Our work involves partnerships with governments, mobile network operators, and international agencies to improve public health, disaster response, and development planning. From 2012, PwC has been our auditor. We are now looking to find a new auditor from 1 July 2025.

Finance team and accounting

Flowminder operates with an in-house finance team consisting of a Head of Finance and a Finance Manager. We outsource payroll services and engage external providers for additional accounting support Our statutory accounting, annual reporting and compliance functions are managed by Swedish accountants based in Stockholm.

Our funding comes primarily from donors, including foundations and governments from high-income countries, complemented by income from our commercial consultancy services.. We manage transactions  in SEK, USD, GBP and EUR, with most of our income received in USD and the majority of our expenditure incurred in GBP. Management accounts are prepared in USD and our fiscal year runs from 1 July to 30 June.  A copy of our latest annual report is available on request.

Flowminder employs approximately 25 staff members in the UK, with a small number of additional  employees based in EU countries. Our Chair of the Board is located in Sweden and the remaining three  board members are based across the EU.

We manage a mix of grant-funded and consultancy (sales) contracts, typically ranging in duration from 6 months to 2 years and in value from USD 50,000 to USD 2 million. Our annual turnover is around USD 3 million.

We use the XLedger system for bookkeeping.

Scope of Work

The selected auditor will be responsible for:

  • Conducting an audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing (ISA) and Swedish Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS).
  • Ensuring that the audited annual report is submitted to Skatteverket on time, no later than 15 December each year and tax return is submitted on time.
  • Work alongside the Head of Finance and the external accountants.
  • From time to time answer questions from the Finance team, the Board and the Managing Director. 
  • Providing an annual management letter with recommendations for improvements and present the annual audit to the Board.

Communication, verbally and in writing, with the organisation will be in English, except for reporting, which for statutory reasons need to be in Swedish. The Chair of the Board is a native Swedish speaker.

Ideally firms should have experience or at least an awareness of:

  • Auditing of Swedish foundations or non-profit organisations and any specific reporting requirements or standards;
  • Awareness of the difference between grants and consultancies and how they are accounted for differently;
  • Multiple currency transactions;
  • Organisations working internationally

  • Experience: Details of previous experience auditing non-profit organizations, particularly those operating internationally.
  • Team Composition: Qualifications and experience of the audit team members.
  • Fee Structure: Detailed breakdown of fees, including hourly rates and estimated total annual cost.
