Background
Flowminder is a Swedish operational, non-profit foundation with 30 staff across our three offices in Stockholm (Sweden), Southampton (UK) and Geneva (Switzerland). We seek to improve population well-being among vulnerable people in low- and middle-income countries by providing high-value decision support through data science solutions in the development and humanitarian sectors.
We are part of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) led REACH Consortium, funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The REACH programme is delivering immunisation services in Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan. Powered by a network of global and local partners, the REACH Consortium works to extend services to those beyond the reach of government systems and ensure that no child, wherever they live, is left behind.
In these REACH countries, thousands of children are being left behind each year, missing out on basic, routine vaccines, in large part due to access problems for vaccination teams and long travel times for children to get to vaccination sites. This results in children missing vaccines, making them zero-dose (ZDC) or, when they have an incomplete course, partially immunised.
Our goal in the programme is to improve microplans by providing coordinates of where outreach and mobile vaccinations should take place, along with an estimated number of children living in those locations, as well as the actual maps. We believe in the value of a systematic approach driven by spatial data, generating statistics to help improve delivery.
We are using and integrating geospatial data and digital technologies to help identify, quantify and reach zero-dose children in the REACH project countries. We are working with country teams to integrate data and geospatial inputs into the production of microplans.
Purpose
Our team working on the REACH project is mainly based in the UK, with occasional travel to the project countries. We're looking to appoint a GIS professional to support the implementation of our project outputs and data into immunisation programme planning and delivery in the REACH countries.
With the IRC team based in Nairobi, we are looking for someone based in Nairobi with the ability to travel to the project countries.
Type of contract: Fixed-term (until 28 February 2025, with a minimum of 10 working days per month)
Location: Nairobi, Kenya (Hybrid working, with home-based working and office working for meetings )
Start date: ASAP

GIS
- Support us in building an enhanced understanding of user needs among the various partners in the project.
- Develop, in collaboration with relevant colleagues, GIS training materials and resources for use in face-to-face and online/remote/distance training and capacity strengthening, e.g. webinars, videos, PowerPoints, presentations, manuals, and also contribute to material production by others. These materials will be tailored to the needs of the project and users.
- Deliver training sessions, in-person and online, to build the capacity of local partners so that, by the end of 2024, they are able to manage and endorse the use of geospatial data for microplanning.
- Assist with country data gathering/sharing from relevant agencies and sectors collection for GIS analysis.
- Provide ad-hoc geospatial expertise to project partners.
- Process available geo-referenced datasets (such as vaccination site points and population rasters) using relevant predefined methods and workflows, software and code for data cleaning and statistical analysis.
- Produce presentations, reports, papers and/or other means of communication for delivery of analyses to different audiences. This includes producing graphs, maps and other graphics to effectively communicate the results to various stakeholders.
Coordination and engagement
- Work closely with our UK-based Project Manager to support the coordination of our activities across the project countries.
- Build and maintain excellent relationships with in-country stakeholders.
- Ensure effective communication, coordination and liaison about our work.
- Represent Flowminder at meetings and events taking place with the Nairobi based Project Management Unit and in the project countries.
- Monitor and support the printing and dissemination of our data products to project vaccination sites.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent skills in GIS (Geographic Information Systems) software e.g. ArcGIS and/or QGIS
- Experience in using geo-referenced data.
Demonstrated professional experience in data analysis, statistics, or data-related fields. - Evidence of successful experience of designing and delivering training, ideally in GIS analysis and/or statistical analysis and/or demography.
- Experience in reporting analytical findings and in data visualisation.
- Experience writing well-documented, maintainable code (python, R, etc), especially for solving spatial problems and/or performing spatial analysis.
- An interest in working on humanitarian and development data-related challenges
- Ability to work well in a team and independently.
- Genuine interest in, and willingness to further understand, the mission and operations of Flowminder and the REACH project.
- Genuine desire to see the outputs of your work improve the lives of vulnerable populations.

- Good understanding of low and middle-income country (LMIC) contexts
- Experience working with government agencies particularly in LMIC contexts
- Experience of working on humanitarian and development data-related challenges
- Contributions to the development of software solutions for data-related activities (data access, collection, cleaning, analysis, interpretation, dissemination)
- Experience with version control software (including git).
Travels
- Travel to the project implementation countries will be required.
