On 04 October 2016, Hurricane Matthew hit the coasts of Haiti. The hurricane caused great destruction especially in the Southwest of the country. Tens of thousands were in need of humanitarian assistance. Flowminder has been monitoring population displacement and network functionality.
The latest maps and data have been hosted on the WorldPop website and present a summary of estimated population movements as of 24 October 2016. Estimates are based on movements of de-identified Digicel's SIM cards which made or received at least one call pre-Hurricane and on 24 October 2016. The SIM card movements are combined with available population data derived from estimates for the year 2015.
